REPAIR OF A VIOLIN

I received a call from an administrator of an orchestra in Philadelphia who had been directed to me by a violin shop in Manhattan. One of the violinists had an accident with her instrument and it needed to be inspected and repaired as soon as possible.

The next morning at 9:00 AM a driver arrived at our doorstep along with the musician who presented me with the violin. She asked if I could repair it quickly as she was expected to perform in two concertos the next week.

I ordered breakfast for everyone and went to work. The repair took me about four hours and another hour to airbrush a finish over the affected area. Because the violin had to be returned to Philadelphia that evening, I had no choice but to use lacquer for the repair. I used a chemical hardener to hasten the curing of the paint and carefully wrapped the completed instrument in wax paper and advised the woman to keep the violin out of its for at least a couple weeks.
